Studio vs Location Wedding Photos Kyoto: Time, Weather & Prices

Studio vs Location Wedding Photos Kyoto: Time, Weather & Prices

If you are planning a trip to Kyoto and want wedding photos in kimono or a wedding dress, the first choice is simple: a studio, or a real Kyoto location. This guide compares the two for travelers, with the time each takes, how weather and crowds affect your day, Pure’s actual prices, and the combination plans that give you both.

Quick answer

  • Studio photos are shorter and weather-proof: Pure’s Kimono Studio Plan and Wedding Dress Studio Plan are ¥121,000 (tax included) each, about 3 hours on the day.
  • Location photos give you real Kyoto streets, temples and gardens: Kimono Location Plan and Wedding Dress Location Plan start at ¥154,000 (tax included), about 5 hours, 150+ photos. Costs may differ depending on the location.
  • Combination plans let you do both: kimono in the studio and a dress on location (or the reverse) for ¥231,000 (tax included), 250+ photos, 5 to 6 hours.
  • For location shoots, postponing because of a rain or storm forecast costs nothing if decided up to two days before the shoot date.
  • Weekends and Japanese national holidays add ¥33,000 (tax included).

What is the difference between studio and location wedding photos in Kyoto?

A studio shoot takes place indoors with set backdrops, controlled lighting and props. A location shoot takes you out to places such as Higashiyama’s stone-paved lanes near Ninenzaka, Arashiyama, Gion Shirakawa, the Keage Incline or temples like Daikakuji, Bishamondo and Zuishin-in. The table below sums up how they compare for a traveler.

In kimono, the bride can wear a shiromuku (an all-white bridal kimono, traditionally said to stand for purity and a fresh start), an iro-uchikake (a colorful, richly patterned over-robe) or a hikifurisode (a long-sleeved kimono with a trailing hem). The groom wears montsuki, a black formal kimono with family crests, worn with hakama trousers. In a studio, these colors stand out against a clean backdrop. On location, they meet the wood, stone and maples of Kyoto.

How long does each take, and how does it fit a Kyoto itinerary?

In Pure’s example schedules from the website, both types of shoot start at 10:00.

Because the day ends around mid-afternoon, you still have the evening for dinner or a walk. It is usually easier to avoid your arrival and departure days and choose a relaxed day in the middle of your trip. Our Kyoto itinerary guide for a 3-5 day trip explains how to choose. Pure is inside The Westin Miyako Kyoto in Higashiyama, which makes it easy to reach from the eastern side of the city.

How do weather, seasons and crowds affect each option?

A studio shoot happens rain or shine, which matters in Kyoto’s rainy season or on cold winter days. For location shoots, Pure’s FAQ explains the rain policy: postponing the shoot date because of a rain or storm forecast carries no charge up to two days before. We accept messages from two days before the shoot, and we recommend deciding by then whether to go ahead or reschedule. If you still want to shoot in bad weather and the photographer judges it possible, photos can be taken with umbrellas. If the date changes, your preferred new date or the same photographer may not be available.

Seasons are the main reason couples choose a location. Autumn leaves are a favorite, and temples such as Bishamondo and Zuishin-in turn red, although the exact timing changes every year. Winter gives a calm, crisp look. Spring cherry blossoms are another popular season, with timing that also varies by year. See our Kyoto autumn wedding photos guide for seasonal locations.

Popular areas such as Higashiyama can be busy, especially in autumn and cherry blossom season. A little etiquette helps: keep paths clear for other visitors, stay quiet near worship halls, and follow any signs at temples and shrines. You can browse real shoots in our Higashiyama photo gallery (page text in Japanese, the photos speak for themselves).

The Kyoto Townhouse (Kyo-machiya) with Garden Plan is a middle path: a traditional townhouse studio with a garden, with the location fee and entrance fee included. Combination plans suit couples who want a classic studio portrait and a Kyoto scene in one day. Weekends and national holidays add ¥33,000 (tax included). How do I book and prepare from abroad?

  • Book early: many couples apply about 1 to 2 months before their date. The earliest request is one week ahead, and bookings open up to 180 days ahead. In busy seasons a photographer may not be available, so allow time.
  • Bring tabi (white split-toe socks worn with kimono), an undergarment and a towel. Pure can also prepare them for a fee if you ask in advance.
  • Makeup is basically provided by the salon, but please bring items that touch the eyes, such as mascara and eyeliner. They can also be bought at the salon.
  • Payment is by credit card only (VISA, MASTER, JCB, AMEX, DINERS), by the day before the shoot.
  • Photos are uploaded to a viewing site about 2 to 3 weeks after the shoot, and you receive the URL and login by email.

You can write to us in English through our contact form with your travel dates, preferred attire and whether you lean toward studio or location.

Which is better for a short trip, studio or location?

If you have only a day or two in Kyoto, a 3-hour studio plan is easier to fit in and is not affected by weather. If Kyoto scenery matters most, a 5-hour location plan still ends around mid-afternoon in the example schedule.

What happens if it rains on my location shoot day?

Postponing because of a rain or storm forecast carries no charge up to two days before the shoot date. If you choose to go ahead and the photographer judges it possible, you can shoot with umbrellas.

Can I do both kimono and a wedding dress?

Yes. Choose the Kimono & Dress Studio Plan (¥220,000, tax included), a combination plan at ¥231,000 (tax included), or the Kimono & Dress Location Plan at ¥253,000 (tax included).

Can our family come along?

Yes, family members are welcome to watch the shoot.

Do we need permits for temples or other locations?

Shoots at Pure’s designated locations are possible. Some places you choose yourself, such as public facilities, parks or shrines, may need advance permission, which couples check and apply for themselves. For details on a specific place, please ask us when you contact us.
