Kyoto Seasons for Travelers: 4-Season Wedding Photo Guide

This guide is for couples planning a trip to Kyoto in the coming months who would like wedding photos in kimono or a wedding dress during their stay. You will learn what each Kyoto season usually feels like, which Pure photo locations suit it, how a photo day fits into your itinerary, and what it costs.

Quick answer

  • Cherry blossoms usually bloom around late March to early April, fresh green follows around late April to May, autumn leaves usually color from mid-November to early December, and winter (December to February) is quieter. Exact timing changes every year.
  • For autumn, Pure photographs at temples such as Bishamondo, Daikakuji, Zuishin-in and Sennyuji, and at Takaragaike Pond. In winter, Arashiyama and Konkai Komyoji Temple have a calm, quiet feel. A studio works in any season.
  • The Kimono Location Plan is ¥154,000 (tax included) for 150+ photos in about 5 hours. Studio plans start at ¥121,000 (tax included). Weekends and Japanese national holidays add ¥33,000 (tax included).
  • A location day usually runs from 10:00 to about 15:00, so your evening stays open for sightseeing.
  • Many couples book about 1 to 2 months ahead. You can book up to 180 days in advance.

Which Pure photo locations match each season?

Spring: cherry blossoms

Spring is a short and lively season. Blossoms open and fall within a short window, so it helps to stay flexible. Open settings such as Keage Incline, the Kamo River, Maruyama Park and the Kyoto Botanical Garden are good places to start the conversation. The old streets of Higashiyama, around Ninenzaka slope and Nene-no-michi, suit kimono in every season.

Early summer: fresh green

Fresh green is a quieter time than the blossom season. Young leaves make white kimono look especially clean. The Kyoto Townhouse (Kyo-machiya) with Garden Plan takes place at a traditional townhouse studio with a garden in Kyoto, and the location fee and entrance fee are included. See real photos on our Kyoto machiya wedding photos page. Zuishin-in Temple, Takaragaike Pond and the Kyoto Botanical Garden are also worth asking about. During the rainy season and the summer heat, many couples choose a studio plan.

Autumn: colored leaves

Autumn is the season right now in Kyoto, and it is the busiest time of year. Our locations for autumn color include the stone steps of Bishamondo Temple, the Osawa Pond at Daikakuji Temple, the veranda of Zuishin-in Temple, the garden of Sennyuji Temple and the hills around Takaragaike Pond. For more detail, read our Kyoto autumn wedding photos guide.

Winter: quiet Kyoto

Winter is calmer, and the colors are softer. Togetsukyo Bridge in Arashiyama makes a quiet backdrop. You can find real shoots on our Arashiyama wedding photos page. Konkai Komyoji Temple also suits winter. Bring a warm coat for moving between places.

Which bridal kimono suits each season?

Traditional Japanese wedding attire has its own meaning, and it can work with the season.

  • Shiromuku: an all-white bridal kimono. White is traditionally said to stand for purity. It looks clean against fresh green, and it stands out against red leaves or a winter scene.
  • Iro-uchikake: a colorful, richly patterned outer kimono, traditionally worn for celebration. Bright colors add warmth in winter and match the autumn leaves.
  • Montsuki: the groom’s formal black kimono with family crests, usually worn with striped hakama trousers.
  • Tabi: white split-toe socks worn with kimono. You bring these yourself (see below).

Many plans let the bride choose shiromuku, iro-uchikake or hikifurisode (a long-sleeved bridal kimono). Some plans also include a wedding dress and tuxedo, so you can wear both Japanese and western attire on the same day.

How does a photo day fit into a Kyoto itinerary?

Plan one day of your trip for photos. A location day usually looks like this:

  • 10:00: The bride arrives at Pure for dressing, makeup and hair.
  • 11:00: The groom arrives and gets ready.
  • 11:30: Travel to the location and prepare.
  • 12:00: Photography begins, following your plan.
  • 15:00: Back at Pure, change into your own clothes, a light hair touch-up, and payment of any extras.

Please bring tabi, undergarments and towels, or ask us in advance to prepare them for you (there is a charge). Makeup is provided. If you prefer to use your own mascara or eyeliner, please bring it. Family members are welcome to come and watch.

How much does it cost? Plans from ¥121,000

All prices are tax included. Location costs may differ depending on the location. Weekends and Japanese national holidays add ¥33,000 (tax included). The English page shows the full price list for every plan.

How should you behave at temples and on old streets?

Temples are places of worship first. Keep your voices low, give way to visitors and worshippers, and follow any signs or temple staff instructions. On old streets such as Ninenzaka, people live and work nearby, so keep paths clear and move aside when others pass. For more tips, read our Kyoto temple photo etiquette guide.

How far ahead should we book?

Many couples book about 1 to 2 months before their shoot date. You can request a date as soon as one week ahead, but in busy seasons we may not be able to arrange a photographer. Bookings are possible up to 180 days in advance.

Can we still catch the autumn leaves this year?

The leaves usually color from mid-November to early December, though timing changes every year. Because autumn is busy, please contact us as soon as possible with your travel dates.

What happens if it rains on our location day?

If the forecast shows rain or a storm, you can postpone at no charge as long as you decide by 2 days before the shoot. If you still want to shoot and the photographer thinks it is possible, we can shoot with umbrellas. A new date may be hard to match your wishes, and the photographer may change.

When will we receive our photos?

Your photos are uploaded to an online gallery about 2 to 3 weeks after the shoot. We send the link and login by email, and you can view and download them yourself. Files come in JPEG format.

Can we plan everything from abroad?

Yes. You can book an online consultation, and you can write to us in English through our contact form. Please ask us about anything else when you contact us.

Tell us your travel dates and the season you are visiting, and we will suggest locations and a plan that fit your trip. Send us a message through our contact form in English.
